Follow the vehicle schedule
Modern oil-change intervals vary widely. Use the maintenance schedule and oil specification listed by the manufacturer rather than a universal mileage rule. Severe driving conditions may change the recommended interval.
Check the level between services
An engine can consume or leak oil before the next scheduled visit. Check the dipstick as described in the owner’s manual and investigate sudden changes.
Treat warning lights differently from routine maintenance
An oil pressure warning, rapid level loss or visible leak needs prompt attention. Request engine diagnostics rather than assuming an oil change will correct the issue.
